The entire school is invited to create “art in the garden”, I am encouraging every class to “weave” onto our unused bean grid. I hope it will get more students out and interacting with the garden!
The School Gardens Program is approaching the end of its 3-year seed funding for the original 16 schools in Carpinteria, Santa Barbara, Guadalupe and Lompoc school districts. Come June, these schools will be financially dependent on the support of community members like you. Funded initially by the Orfalea Foundations and offered through Santa Barbara City College – Center for Sustainability, the School Gardens Program, has developed inclusive garden programs in 25 schools in just 2 years. And, we are on track for establishing 4 more garden programs this year in 3 different school districts across Santa Barbara County.
By placing edible gardens in schools with inspired garden educators, we create:
* A reconnection with “where food comes from” and its health benefits by experiencing the challenges and fun of growing and eating food.
* A dynamic living laboratory to teach numerous disciplines (science, math, language arts, history, and much more) in a connected and relevant environment.
* Inspiration for teachers to integrate curriculum in creative ways inside and outside the classroom.
* A cooperative system whereby working together in the soil, we cultivate not just food, but respect for ourselves, each other, and the earth.
